In this talk I argue for and outline the researchagenda of a frame work that integrates corpus-based andgenre-based approaches to EAP writing research and pedagogy, drawing upon theEnglish for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach to genre and a discourse-functionalapproach to lexico-grammatical analysis. This framework posits two fundamentalgoals of EAP writing research and pedagogy, i.e., to help novice EAP writersdevelop adequate knowledge of the rhetorical moves and communicative functionscharacteristic of EAP discourse and become proficient in making appropriatelexico-grammatical choices to effectively materialize and organize such movesand functions. To these ends, research in this framework involves compilationof corpora of expert and novice EAP writing in different disciplines annotatedfor rhetorical moves and sentence-level communicative functions, development of computational tools to automate move and function annotation, systematic analysis and description of the distribution of such moves and functions and the lexico-grammatical patterns associated with them in expert and novicecorpora, use of the annotated corpora in EAP writing pedagogy to promote noviceEAP writers’ awareness of the moves and functions and their associatedlexico-grammatical patterns, and use of the annotated corpora as a resource toassist novice EAP writers in the writing and revision process. I considerissues related to discipline specificity, bottom-up vs. top-down methodologies,and context and illustrate the usefulness of this framework using examples fromseveral recent and ongoing research efforts.、

六、 主讲人简介：

Xiaofei Lu is Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics and Asian Studies at The Pennsylvania State University,where he directs the graduate programs in the Department of Applied Linguistics. He was appointed Gil Watz Early Career Professor in Language andLinguistics in 2012-2016. He is also currently Yunshan Chair Professor at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Guest Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include corpuslinguistics, technology-mediated language learning, and the integration ofcorpus-based and genre-based approaches to EAP writing research and pedagogy.He is the author ofComputational Methodsfor Corpus Annotation and Analysis(Springer, 2014). His work appears in American Educational Research Journal,Applied Linguistics, Educational Researcher, English for Specific Purposes,International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, Journal of Pragmatics, Journal ofSecond Language Writing, Language Testing, ReCALL, TESOL Quarterly,and The Modern Language Journal.
