关于举办外语教师发展系列工作坊的通知

各位老师:

为促进我校外语教师的教学科研能力和职业生涯规划能力,由教师发展中心主办、英语教育学院承办的外语教师发展系列工作坊将在近期举行。论坛邀请到美国纽约市立大学冯锡武教授前来进行两周的讲授,将从教学方法、教师职业发展、跨文化交际能力的培养、如何应对课程和教学改革、如何迎接学术和职业挑战等方面与我校教师展开探讨。

二、主讲人简介:

冯锡武,纽约市立大学教育与语言习得教授。长期在中国和美国从事大学教育研究。他的研究领域主要是课程与教学法,认知和元认知过程,二语习得,以及英语语言习得诊断和测试,主持和参与多项语言教学和教师发展项目。冯锡武教授应邀在世界各地很多学术会议和刊物上发表演讲和论文。

三、讲座内容简介:

1. Creating Innovative Pedagogies to EnrichStudents’ Learning Experiences

The demands for concerted attention tostudent learning are coming at a time when research and scholarship on learningare rich with findings and implications for practice. Stunning newresearch on the brain by neuroscientists is adding a new dimension to ourknowledge about learning that reinforces our previously tentative conclusionsfrom cognitive psychology. Research provides growing evidence thatlearning is about making connections. To prepare students forcommunication in a knowledge society, educators need to reevaluate teachingwhile understanding learning from multifaceted viewpoints. Thispresentation will discuss understanding of learning from neurological,cognitive and social perspectives.The wealth of knowledge garnered from research with what weknow about literacy development has the potential to change the way we educateour students. Learningtheory contributes to modern education by unfolding the knowledge about theworking of the neural brain, cognitive processes, and the reality of eachlearner’s social environment. Therefore, effective teaching is toconcentrate on helping students make the connections that constitutelearning. The primary emphasis of the speech is on language teaching andlearning.

2. A Comparative Analysis onCurriculum and Pedagogical DevelopmentRealitiesand Challenges in Educational Reform

Thelecture will present a comprehensive comparative analysis on curriculum andpedagogical development. It will presenteducationalphilosophies and classroom applications the American education andthe Finnish educational system respectively. While overviewing curriculum and pedagogicaldevelopment in American schools, the audience will discover what impacts andchallenges theAmerican education is facing today. Finland as a good model and “a witness” of successfultransformation of public education systemhas attracted attention from many international scholarsrecently. The session willthen analyze an innovative transform of Finnish educational system from mediocre toone of the models of excellence. The goal is togive impetus to broaden channels of communications with the audience on accessto a true education reform.

3. Understanding InterculturalCommunication -- Developing Intercultural Communication Competence

We live in rapidly changing times andchanges are increasing the imperative for intercultural learning. Interculturalconflicts can occur when the participants use their own cultural frames inintercultural settings. It is important to recognize the connections we allhave to many different aspects of social life and develop sensitivity andflexibility to change. The goal is to promote interculturalcommunication, and develop the ability of students to engage in it effectively.The session presents culture as a learned meaning system from different levelsin order to identify intercultural complication and change. Interculturalcompetencies will be discussed and concepts that lead to competent interculturalcommunicators will be demonstrated.

4.Developing Personal, Social,and Communicative Competencies to Meet Academic and Career Challenges

The lecture will discuss the importance of developingstudents’ personal, social and communicative competencies in the learningprocess. It is essential that students acquire competencies incommunication effectively and efficiently in college learning. The effectivecommunicative strategies to be presented will enhance instruction inlanguage education. The goal isnot merely tocreate a rich learningenvironmentbut toempower students and optimizetheir learning experience. Frompedagogical perspective, it emphasizes the communicative learning process thatis proved to be effective in a language classroom in order to help studentsbecome competent personally, socially, and methodologically according totoday’s needs. In this way learners are given the chance to obtain creativity,independence, self-confidence, and competencies.

5.Preparing and Achieving Academic Success--Doctorate Studies in the UnitedStates

Pursuing a PhD rarely is aspontaneous idea. In most cases, the decision to devote a career to science andacademia has matured over many years. Using the time effectively, one willcreate the perfect preconditions for a successful application to a PhD program.Ifyou want to devote your life to science and research, your heart has to be init. Each aspiring PhD candidate should thus carefully think about theimplications of this step before actually applying to graduate school. Thedecision to pursue a PhD will be worth it, if you are both committed andpassionate about it. Preparing and then achieving academic success, thekey is to trust yourself.The lecture will take you to a tour inwhich you will be able discover the myths from PhD application to itscompletion and from philosophical concepts to educational practices. Itstarts with program selection and putting together an application includingmaterial and mental preparations and applying steps. In addition togeneral tips on taking classes, preparing a proposal, and drafting adissertation, the session will share experiences and lessons a candidate mayneed to coordinate with the dissertation adviser, program committee, and otherprofessors from the department and take advantage of the services and facilityprovided by the university. Suggestions will be provided to helpcandidates seek opportunities of financial support, campus employment (TA/RA),publication, and academic activities.
