Seminar Series on Social Science Methodology

The seminar series aim to introduce advanced students, researchers and teachers the core components, toolboxes, tools and techniques of social science methodology, i.e., philosophies, terminologies, paradigms, methodologies and methods, together with their respective roles, functions and coherence in academic writing, such as phd dissertation and academic publication.

For phd students and for researchers and academic writers, methodology plays an indispensable role in explaining their approach the identified research problem area and research question, and why they want to do the research in a particular way in order to generate the result. The main objective of methodology is to identify and understand the methods applied in the research and explain why the chosen method or methods are appropriate for addressing the defined research problem and finding a solution.

In other words, methodology is a discussion about what type of research paradigm/approach and method are appropriate for a research topic, including the techniques or the specific procedures which help researchers to identify, choose, process, and analyze information about that topic.

For academic writing, such as phd dissertation, the methodology chapter includes a broad philosophical underpinning to the chosen research methods. It clarifies the interrelationship of the key components of research and explains why particular theories are chosen and why particular qualitative or quantitative methods are applied, or a mixture of both.

Since a phd research project is usually defined as a contribution to knowledge gap within an academic domain, phd students need to provide a justification so that readers will understand what they are trying to do and why it is important to do it this new or innovative way. The methodology chapter is the place where such a justification is provided and explained. PhD students are expected to provide a clear and well-founded academic rationale for all their choices regarding research methods, encompassing both theoretical and empirical tools they have employed.

The methodology seminar series comprises four seminars. The first two seminars provide a thorough introduction to methodology and research paradigms, including specific examples of methodologies used in Ph.D. dissertations.

The third seminar, on the other hand, directly connects methodology with academic writing, particularly focusing on the methodology section or chapter within both MA and Ph.D. dissertations.

The final seminar is structured to be "student-driven," featuring practice-oriented and interactive group exercises. Professor Li will assume the role of a "supervisor," offering students essential feedback, suggestions, and assessments during the session.
