五、讲座内容简介:

Fictional texts describe aworld of their own (a "text world") which is principally differentfrom the world the author and his/her addressees live in. In some texts, thetext world is "marked" as belonging to a specific culture area (whichmay or may not be that of the readers), thus creating different degrees ofcultural distance between the text world and the readers' world. In others, thetext world is apparently described as "neutral" or"general" (e.g. set "a long time ago in a far distantplace"). In the latter case, the readers are likely to interpret both theverbal and the nonverbal behaviour of the fictitious characters described inthe text as corresponding to the ("real") world they know, i.e. theytry to create a cultural "zero-distance".

Before embarking on thetranslation process, translators have to make up their minds whether they wantto create cultural distance orrathertransfer the culture markers tothe target audience’s culture in order to allow for identification. Inchildren’s books, this is often done if the text is intended to achieve apedagogical function.

Lewis Carroll’s famous bookAlice in Wonderland, originally written for a child, is published as a bookdirected both at children and adults. Taking various translations of this bookinto German, French, Spanish, Brazilian, and Italian as an example, we aregoing to look at the culture markers and the influence these have on thereception of translated fictional texts. Students are invited to bring theirown Chinese translations of the book.
