Advertising is an interdisciplinary artifact which is constructed with verbal and pictorial elements that function as signifiers generating feelings, beliefs, hopes, desires and fantasies in those who look at it. In the postmodern context, advertising is more concerned with cultural representations of the advertisement than any qualities of the product that it tries to sell. In the signifying system of advertising, the human body becomes a source and a locus of meanings that takes on a wide semantic range: a biological entity, a cultural product and a psycho-sexual construction. This presentation will focus on the decoding of a collection of male and female images from contemporary flat advertisements from a feminist critical perspective. A detailed analysis of those stereotypical and subversive images will demonstrate the role of advertising as a visual language in making what is social and constructed seem ‘natural’, highlighting the complexity of power relations in visual representations and the ideological base of supposedly ‘neutral’ or ‘mainstream’ linguistic and cultural interpretations. In the transformed TESOL classroom where content and language integrated learning takes place, advertising as “motivated representation”, like other forms of visual culture such as photographic and cinematic texts, can be fruitfully employed not only to improve the learners’ language proficiency but also sharpen their critical awareness and cultural sensitivity.

, he is Professor of English and Comparative Cultural Studies, and Director of MPI-Bell Centre of English,

Polytechnic Institute. He is Vice President of Sino-American Comparative Culture Association of China, President of Federation of Translators and Interpreters of Macao and Council Member of International Translators Federation. He taught BA, MA & PhD courses at GDUFS & HK Lingnan University such as “Communicative English for Chinese Learners (CECL)”, “Modern British & American Drama”, “Contemporary Critical Theory”, “Comparative Cultural Studies”, “Film Culture” and “Culture and Translation”. His major publications include Technologising the Male Body: British Cinema 1957-1987, New Perspectives: Contemporary Literary and Cultural Studies, Decoding Contemporary Britain, Literature, Culture and Postmodern Transformations: 8 Case Studies from William Shakespeare to James Bond. He is General Editor of the New Topics in Contemporary Cultural Studies Series (6 vols), and co-edited with Doreen Wu a special issue for the journal of Critical Arts, Media Discourses and Cultural Globalisation: A Chinese Perspective (Routledge & UNISA, 2011). He has also published over 60 academic journal papers and book chapters in ELT, literary, cultural and translation studies. He loves music, cinema and ice cream.
