七、 主讲人简介

Dr.XUESONG (ANDY) GAO is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, theUniversity of Hong Kong. His current research and teaching interests are in theareas of learner autonomy, sociolinguistics, language learning narratives andlanguage teacher education. He is co-editor of System: An International Journalof Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics and serves on editorialboards of The Asia Pacific Education Researcher, Journal of Language, Identityand Education and Teacher Development.

八、 内容简介:

Inthis presentation, I share my experiences of undertaking major review studiesfirst and then will focus on a review study on empirical studies in leadinglanguage learning and teaching journals published on the Chinese mainlandduring the years 2008–2011. Through an extended process of selection, 60empirical studies were chosen to showcase the research scholarship published inthese leading Chinese journals. The selected studies were found to havedocumented a variety of approaches to improving the teaching of the Englishlanguage and meeting the demand for proficient English graduates in China. Theyaddress a wide range of topics including language learners’ cognitiveprocesses, their language performance, and language teachers’ professional development.The review also noted that these leading Chinese journals have become morereceptive to empirical studies and have published an increasing number ofqualitative and mixed method studies. However, in comparison with thosepublished in international journals, research scholarship in those journals isstill beset with problems and there is a pressing need for Chinese researchersto become ‘discerning’ producers of scholarship. The findings suggest that theyshould be more critically aware of methodological issues in conducting languagelearning and teaching research. To end the presentation, I shall also reflecton the pitfalls that one may have when conducting such major reviews.
