Introduction to the Speech:

Love, and ideas about love, seems to occur in most if not all societies. People meet, fall in love, and marry, or create a relationship which is important to them. Writers have written endlessly about love, what it might be, what its causes are, and what its effect can be. Books, films, and especially popular songs are often mostly about love. John Lennon wrote “All you need is love” – and he might well have been talking about pop music. Take love away, and what would be left?

Until recently, the topic of love has been left to poets, novelists and the like. But in the past 4 or 5 decades psychologists have turned their attention to such a significant area of human behavior. They have started to examine why people are attracted to each other, what the experience of love really is, and how it affects individuals. Initially, most of the research was carried out in the West; but now questions arise about how far this research applies to other countries and cultures. We want to know if the experience of love is different in, say, China, from that in the USA; if it plays the same part in different cultures and relationships; if romantic and marriage relationships differ; and if some are better than others. As always when considering different cultures, we want to find out what the similarities and differences are, how far we can really understand them, and how much we can learn from them.
